Guides · Tax residency in Colombia
More than 183 days in Colombia? You may already be a tax resident.
The rule is about physical presence, not visas. We count your days, decide with you whether residency helps or hurts, register you with the tax authority and file correctly, in English.

In short
The essentials, in three lines.
- 01You are a Colombian tax resident if you are physically present more than 183 days, consecutive or not, within any rolling 365-day period. The digital nomad visa grants no exemption.
- 02Residents declare worldwide income and worldwide assets with progressive rates. Non-residents pay a flat 35% only on Colombian-source income, usually via withholding.
- 03Double taxation is avoided with treaties (Spain, Chile, Mexico, Canada, Switzerland, the UK, France, Italy, Japan and others) and with credits for tax paid abroad, if documented.

What to know
Before you start.
Residency is not always bad
Residents get deductions, exempt income and progressive brackets that can beat the flat 35% non-resident withholding on Colombian income. It depends on where your income comes from. We model both.
Your home country still matters
Some countries tax citizens regardless of residence. Treaty tie-breakers and foreign tax credits need documents from both sides; keep every certificate.
Property changes everything
Buying an apartment usually pushes your Colombian assets above the wealth declaration threshold, resident or not. Registration of the investment with the central bank is what lets you take the money out later.
