Visas · Retirement visa

The retirement visa is straightforward. The tax on your pension is not.

Colombia grants a migrant visa to a foreigner receiving a lifetime pension above the legal threshold from a state or private pension fund. The immigration side is comparatively simple. What catches retirees is what happens to a foreign pension, and to the house they left behind, once they have been here long enough to become tax resident.

  • A certified lifetime pension, apostilled and translated.
  • A migrant category: the years count towards residency.
  • No work permit, and no access to Colombian social security.

M · Migrant

Duration

Granted for up to three years.

Work permit

No work permit. The visa is granted on the basis of the pension.

Counts towards residency

Five continuous years as an M-Pensionado holder count towards the R resident visa.

The financial threshold

Written in law as minimum wages, not in pesos.

Colombian visa thresholds move every January with the minimum wage, and article 79 measures them at the date you file. The peso figures below are calculated from the 2026 wage, currently $1.750.905 a month, set transitionally by Decreto 0159 de 2026.

  • Minimum monthly pension

    $5.252.715per month

At least 3 monthly minimum wages

Article 77 requires a lifetime pension of at least 3 minimum wages a month.

Requirements

What the file has to prove.

Consulates apply these differently in practice, and the detail changes between resolutions. Treat this as the shape of the file, then have it confirmed for your nationality before you submit.

  • A pension certificate from the paying institution, state or private, apostilled or legalised and officially translated into Spanish.
  • Evidence the pension is actually being received.
  • A police or judicial record certificate from your country of residence covering the last three years.
  • A medical certificate of psychophysical fitness.
  • Health cover valid in Colombia.

Who does what

We are accountants. That is precisely why this works.

This visa turns on a financial fact somebody has to establish and certify. That is our work, and it is where applications fail. The immigration filing is prepared with the firm’s immigration counsel, briefed and supervised by us, so one team holds the whole file and you deal with one point of contact.

Handled by the firm

The financial half, signed by a licensed accountant.

  • How your foreign pension is treated in Colombia once you become tax resident.
  • Whether the double taxation treaty with your country protects the pension, and to what extent.
  • Your Colombian tax return, covering the pension, other foreign income and foreign assets.
  • Foreign asset reporting, which is what most retirees do not see coming.
  • Timing the move so the first year of residency is handled deliberately.

Coordinated by the firm

The immigration filing, by counsel we brief and supervise.

  • The visa application and the consular filing.
  • Apostille, legalisation and official translation of the pension documents.
  • Foreigner registration and the cédula de extranjería.

We do not present coordinated work as our own, and we do not quote processing times or predict approvals. Those belong to the authorities.

The part most sites get wrong

What this visa does to your tax position.

Once you have been present 183 days or more in any rolling 365-day period you are a Colombian tax resident, declaring worldwide income, which includes a foreign pension, and reporting assets held abroad, which includes the property and accounts you left at home. Whether the pension is actually taxed here depends on the treaty between Colombia and the country paying it. Note separately that this visa expressly does not allow you to join the Colombian social security system except under a bilateral or multilateral agreement, so private health cover is not optional.

After approval

Foreigner registration and the cédula de extranjería.

  • Register within

15 calendar days from entering Colombia, or from the date the visa is issued if it was granted while you were in the country

  • Apply for the cédula

at the moment of registration, or within 3 business days where the registration was completed electronically

Applies to holders and beneficiaries of any visa valid for more than three months, and is issued by Migración Colombia. The exemption list covers tourism, business, crew, events and two courtesy categories are exempt regardless of the visa's validity. In short

The essentials, in three lines.

  1. 01Colombia's M pensionado visa, under article 77 of Resolución 5477 de 2022, is granted to foreigners receiving a lifetime pension of at least 3 monthly minimum wages, certified, apostilled and translated.
  2. 02It carries no work permit and expressly does not allow the holder to join the Colombian social security system except under a bilateral or multilateral agreement.
  3. 03Five continuous years on this visa count towards the R resident visa, and a holder who becomes tax resident declares worldwide income including the foreign pension, plus assets held abroad.

Questions

What people ask about this visa.

Once you are a Colombian tax resident, foreign pension income falls inside a worldwide-income return. Whether it is taxed here, and at what rate, depends on the double taxation agreement between Colombia and the country paying the pension and on the type of pension. It is a country-specific answer, so we work it out from your documents before you commit to the move.

Colombian tax residents report assets held outside Colombia where the thresholds are met, including property, bank accounts and investments. Retirees are the group most surprised by this, because the asset produces no income and feels unconnected to Colombia. Declaring it is usually straightforward; discovering it in year three is not.

Article 77 states expressly that holders of this visa may not join the Colombian social security system, except where a bilateral or multilateral agreement provides otherwise. Health cover valid in Colombia is therefore a requirement of the visa and a practical necessity for as long as you hold it.

Yes. Pensionado is a migrant category, and five continuous years of it count towards the R resident visa. Continuity is what matters: each visa has to be granted before the previous one expires, and a salvoconducto never counts as continuity, so renewals should be started early rather than at the last moment.

Where this comes from

Verified on 10 September 2026 against the consolidated text of Resolución 5477 de 2022 and its amendments. Immigration rules change by resolution and consulates apply them differently in practice. This page is general information about how the financial requirements work, not immigration advice, and nothing here is a promise of approval or of a processing time.

Free initial call

Start with the number the application turns on.

Before anything is filed, someone has to establish the investment, the capital or the income, and be willing to certify it. That is where we start, and it is the part that decides whether the file is worth submitting.

What decides your tax position

183 days

Tax residency starts at 183 days of presence in any rolling 365-day window. No visa category changes that, and the tax authority has said so in a published ruling.
