The R visa is Colombia's permanent residency category. For investors, business owners and pensioners it is reached one way: five continuous years holding the corresponding migrant visa. The investment fast-track that older guides still describe was abolished in October 2022.

This is the destination. Qualifying periods were rewritten by Resolución 10434 de 2023: two years for the Mercosur, Andean and Colombian-parent categories, three for the spouse of a Colombian national, and five for the investor, business owner, pensioner, worker, independent professional and permanent partner categories.

What the file has to prove.
Consulates apply these differently in practice, and the detail changes between resolutions. Treat this as the shape of the file, then have it confirmed for your nationality before you submit.
- The qualifying number of continuous years holding the relevant migrant visa.
- Unbroken continuity: each visa granted before the previous one expired. A salvoconducto never counts.
- Evidence that the basis of the previous visa was maintained throughout the period.
- A valid passport and the documentation the consulate requires for your route.
- Note that meeting the time requirement does not create an automatic entitlement to the visa.

What this visa does to your tax position.
Anyone applying for an R visa has almost certainly been a Colombian tax resident for years. Those filings become part of the story: a consistent record of declared worldwide income and reported foreign assets supports the application, and gaps in it are awkward to explain. Treat the tax history as part of the residency file from the first year rather than the last.

Applies to holders and beneficiaries of any visa valid for more than three months, and is issued by Migración Colombia. The exemption list covers tourism, business, crew, events and two courtesy categories are exempt regardless of the visa's validity. No. This is the most persistent error in English-language content about Colombia. Resolución 6045 de 2017 granted a resident visa directly for foreign direct investment above 650 minimum wages, and Resolución 5477 de 2022 abolished that route in October 2022. There is no investment-based fast track at any amount today.
No. Both sit in the visitor category, and the qualifying periods are built on migrant categories only. This is the practical reason the first visa you take matters so much: two years as a digital nomad leaves you exactly where you started as far as residency is concerned.
Yes. The R visa lapses automatically if the holder is absent from Colombia for two consecutive uninterrupted years. Holders must also transfer the visa to a new passport every five years. Both are administrative and both are entirely avoidable with a calendar.
