Visas · Digital nomad visa
The digital nomad visa does not exempt you from Colombian tax.
Colombia offers a visitor visa for remote workers and digital entrepreneurs earning from outside the country. Two things about it are widely misreported: it is only open to nationals of countries that are exempt from Colombia's short-stay visa requirement, and it grants no tax exemption whatsoever.
- Open only to nationals of short-stay visa exempt countries.
- You may not earn from a Colombian person or company.
- It creates no tax exemption. Days present decide that.
Visa V — Nómada Digital · Article 46 of Resolución 5477 de 2022
Start with the financial side.
Tell us what you hold today. We answer the same business day.
Category
V · Visitor
Duration
Granted for up to two years. Beneficiaries are permitted.
Work permit
Remote work for a foreign employer or foreign clients only. The visa expressly does not permit working or carrying out paid activity for a person or company domiciled in Colombia.
Counts towards residency
None. This is a visitor category, and time on a V visa does not accumulate towards the R resident visa. People who spend two years here as digital nomads and then discover they have built nothing towards residency are a common case.
The financial threshold
Written in law as minimum wages, not in pesos.
Colombian visa thresholds move every January with the minimum wage, and article 79 measures them at the date you file. The peso figures below are calculated from the 2026 wage, currently $1.750.905 a month, set transitionally by Decreto 0159 de 2026.
Minimum monthly income
$5.252.715per month
At least 3 monthly minimum wages
Article 46 requires 3 minimum wages a month, evidenced with the last three months of bank statements.
Requirements
What the file has to prove.
Consulates apply these differently in practice, and the detail changes between resolutions. Treat this as the shape of the file, then have it confirmed for your nationality before you submit.
- A passport from a country exempt from Colombia's short-stay visa requirement. Nationals of non-exempt countries cannot obtain this visa.
- A letter from the foreign company or companies stating the relationship and the remuneration, or proof of being a partner or co-owner of a foreign company.
- The last three months of bank statements evidencing income at or above the threshold.
- For entrepreneurs, a motivation letter describing the digital venture.
- Health cover valid in Colombia for the period of the visa.
Who does what
We are accountants. That is precisely why this works.
This visa turns on a financial fact somebody has to establish and certify. That is our work, and it is where applications fail. The immigration filing is prepared with the firm’s immigration counsel, briefed and supervised by us, so one team holds the whole file and you deal with one point of contact.
Handled by the firm
The financial half, signed by a licensed accountant.
- The day count: whether you are about to become a Colombian tax resident, and exactly when.
- A written residency determination applied to your real travel history.
- Your Colombian tax return once you cross the threshold, covering worldwide income and foreign assets.
- Treaty relief and credit for tax already paid in your home country.
- Whether your arrangement risks creating a permanent establishment in Colombia for the foreign company that pays you.
Coordinated by the firm
The immigration filing, by counsel we brief and supervise.
- The visa application and the consular filing.
- Foreigner registration and the cédula de extranjería, which this visa does require.
We do not present coordinated work as our own, and we do not quote processing times or predict approvals. Those belong to the authorities.
The part most sites get wrong
What this visa does to your tax position.
This is the point of the page. The Colombian tax authority has addressed it directly: DIAN Concepto General 009079 of 13 July 2023 states that there is no special tax regime for digital nomads, that they are subject to the ordinary national taxes, and that they may acquire Colombian tax residency under article 10 of the Estatuto Tributario, which then taxes them on income of both national and foreign source and on assets held inside and outside the country. The visa's restriction on earning from Colombian companies is an immigration condition, not a tax exemption. The trap is the combination: past 183 days you are taxed on worldwide income while your visa simultaneously forbids you from earning Colombian-source income.
After approval
Foreigner registration and the cédula de extranjería.

Applies to holders and beneficiaries of any visa valid for more than three months, and is issued by Migración Colombia. In short
The essentials, in three lines.
- 01Colombia's V digital nomad visa, under article 46 of Resolución 5477 de 2022, is for remote work for a foreign employer or foreign clients, requires monthly income of at least 3 minimum wages, and is granted for up to two years.
- 02It is available only to nationals of countries exempt from Colombia's short-stay visa requirement, and it does not permit paid work for a person or company domiciled in Colombia.
- 03It grants no tax exemption: DIAN Concepto General 009079 of 2023 confirms there is no special regime for digital nomads, and residency follows the 183-day presence test in article 10 of the Estatuto Tributario.
Questions
What people ask about this visa.
If you are present 183 calendar days or more in any rolling 365-day period, yes. You become a Colombian tax resident and declare worldwide income and foreign assets, with credit for tax paid abroad and any treaty relief that applies. Below that threshold Colombia taxes only Colombian-source income. The visa changes neither answer, and DIAN has said so in a published ruling.
No, and this is missing from most English guides. The applicant's passport must be from a country or territory that is exempt from Colombia's short-stay visa requirement. Nationals of countries that are not on that list cannot obtain the digital nomad visa at all, whatever their income.
No, and that is what catches people. The test runs over any 365-day period and counts days of entry and exit, so a window can straddle two calendar years. Someone who arrives in September and stays through the following June has crossed it without ever spending 183 days inside a single calendar year. Where the stay spans two tax years, residency is treated as beginning in the second one.
Yes. Holders of a visa valid for more than three months must register as a foreigner within fifteen calendar days and apply for the cédula at registration, or within three business days where the registration was done electronically. The digital nomad visa runs up to two years, so it is well over that threshold. The exemption list covers tourism, business, crew, events and certain courtesy visas, not this one.

What decides your tax position
183 days
Tax residency starts at 183 days of presence in any rolling 365-day window. No visa category changes that, and the tax authority has said so in a published ruling.
